Steve has always been happiest creating and building new and beautiful things with his hands. He works with a range of materials: wood, metal, concrete, and oil paints are all at hand in his studio. With an appreciation for the historical and aesthetic value of old wood and metal, Steve is often out searching derelict buildings and junk piles, salvaging found objects and materials to be reclaimed and repurposed. Having spent over a decade as a carpenter and joiner building timber frame homes, he is now adapting those skills to finer work in furniture making and finish carpentry. Redesigning and remodeling, turning inadequate or outdated spaces into something fresh, beautiful, and personal has been a consistent part of his work, whether in the home or the garden.
Steve works out of his restored 1940’s machine shed-turned-studio on his wife’s centennial family farm in White Heath, IL. Together they are also establishing a perennial farm that supports his wife’s business, Backyard Beauty. Steve is frequently joined by his two young helpers who are learning, just as a he did, that if you can imagine it, you can build it.
